Sub Or Hero Sandwich
4 sandwiches The sub, short for submarine—also known as a hero, bomber, grinder, wedge, zep, or hoagie—is essentially a long, wide roll filled with deli meats and cheese. The bread used varies, and they may be served hot or cold. For a hot sub, see Sausage and Pepper Sub.
Ingredients
- One 24-inch Italian or French bread loaf
- (Mayonnaise)
- (Spicy brown mustard)
- About 1 pound thinly sliced salami, turkey, roast beef, prosciutto, mortadella, and/or capicola or ham
- 6 ounces thinly sliced provolone, Swiss, or Cheddar
- (1 cup sliced pickled hot peppers)
- (1 onion, thinly sliced)
- (1 tomato, thinly sliced)
- 2 cups finely shredded lettuce
- Extra-virgin olive oil
- Red or white wine vinegar
- Salt and black pepper
- (Dried oregano)

- About 1 pound thinly sliced salami, turkey, roast beef, prosciutto, mortadella, and/or capicola or ham
- 6 ounces thinly sliced provolone, Swiss, or Cheddar
- (1 cup sliced pickled hot peppers)
- (1 onion, thinly sliced)

- 2 cups finely shredded lettuce
- Extra-virgin olive oil
- Red or white wine vinegar
- Salt and black pepper
- (Dried oregano)

Step 1.
Split in half lengthwise: One 24-inch Italian or French bread loaf

If desired, spread the cut sides with a thin layer of: (Mayonnaise); (Spicy brown mustard)

Layer on half of the bread a combination of 3 or more sandwich meats: About 1 pound thinly sliced salami, turkey, roast beef, prosciutto, mortadella, and/or capicola or ham

Stack on top of the meat: 6 ounces thinly sliced provolone, Swiss, or Cheddar; (1 cup sliced pickled hot peppers); (1 onion, thinly sliced); (1 tomato, thinly sliced); 2 cups finely shredded lettuce

Step 5.
Moisten the lettuce with a drizzle of: Extra-virgin olive oil; Red or white wine vinegar

Step 6.
Season lightly with: Salt and black pepper; (Dried oregano)

Cover with the top half of the bread. Serve immediately or, to let the flavors blend, wrap tightly in foil or plastic wrap and let stand for 30 minutes before serving. Cut into 4 sandwiches.
