Let's Prepare

Collect

Gather these ingredients - no prep needed yet.

  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • Royal Icing

Prepare

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 large egg yolk, at room temperature
  • Red and green gel food coloring, if desired
  • Sprinkles, for decorating

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Heat oven to 350°F. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour and salt; set aside.

  2. Step 2.

Using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar in a large bowl on high speed until light and fluffy, 4 to 6 minutes. Reduce speed to medium, add egg yolk and vanilla, and beat for 5 minutes.

  3. Step 3.

Reduce speed to low and gradually add flour mixture, mixing until just incorporated. Then, using a spatula, fold dough until it forms a ball. If desired, use food coloring to tint some or all of dough.

  4. Step 4.

Fill a cookie press with dough according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Hold the cookie press so it touches the baking sheet (do not line or grease the baking sheet), then squeeze and lift away, spacing cookies 1 inch apart. You will need at least 2 large baking sheets.

  5. Step 5.

Bake, rotating the positions of the baking sheets halfway through, until light golden brown around edges, 11 to 13 minutes. Let cool on baking sheets for 1 minute before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

  6. Step 6.

While cookies cool, prepare the Royal Icing. Decorate cooled cookies with icing and sprinkles as desired.
