Prepare

  • Grate 118 ml sharp cheddar cheese
  • Grate 118 ml Swiss cheese
  • 118 ml canned mushrooms, drained (optional)

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking pan.

  2. Step 2.

Cut the crusts off 8 to 10 slices of white bread, then cut the slices into cubes. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the bottom of the buttered pan.

  3. Step 3.

In a skillet over medium heat, brown 1 pound of sausage, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks. Once fully cooked, sprinkle the sausage crumbles over the bread cubes in the pan.

  4. Step 4.

In a large bowl, lightly beat 6 to 8 eggs. Add ½ cup grated sharp cheddar cheese, ½ cup grated Swiss cheese, ¾ cup half-and-half, 1¼ cups milk, 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon mustard, and salt and pepper to taste. If using, stir in ½ cup drained canned mushrooms. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and sausage in the pan.

  5. Step 5.

Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the casserole is set and golden brown on top. Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
