Gather these ingredients - no prep needed yet.

  • 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter
  • 1½ pounds green cabbage, shredded (about 9 packed cups)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces wide dried egg noodles
  • Black pepper

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Melt in a Dutch oven over medium heat: 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter

  2. Step 2.

Add: 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  3. Step 3.

Cook, stirring, until softened and beginning to brown, about 20 minutes. Reduce the heat if the onion begins to get too dark. Add: 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter

  4. Step 4.

When the butter is melted, add: 1½ pounds green cabbage, shredded (about 9 packed cups); ½ teaspoon salt

  5. Step 5.

Cover and let steam for 5 minutes to wilt the cabbage. Remove the lid and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is very soft and starting to brown, about 15 minutes more. While the cabbage cooks, cook until tender in a large pot of boiling salted water: 8 ounces wide dried egg noodles

  6. Step 6.

Drain and add to the cabbage mixture, tossing to combine. Season liberally with: Black pepper
