  • 3 cups water

  • ½ to 1 cup sugar, to taste

Let's Cook

    Combine in a medium heavy saucepan: 1 pound dried fruit, one kind or mixed; 3 cups water; (Zest of 1 lemon or orange removed in strips with a vegetable peeler); (1 cinnamon stick)

    Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and cook until the fruit is plumped, 25 to 35 minutes, adding more water if necessary to keep the fruit covered. Add: ½ to 1 cup sugar, to taste

  3. Step 3.

    Simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes longer, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Serve warm or chilled.
