Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and let it come fully up to temperature before baking. While the oven heats, cut or tear the bread into small, even cubes so they dry and toast consistently.

  2. Step 2.

Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly toasted and dry to the touch, stirring once about halfway through so they brown evenly.

  3. Step 3.

While the bread is still warm from the oven, transfer it to a large bowl and add the remaining ingredients. Toss everything together until the bread cubes are evenly coated with the seasonings and any fat or liquid.

  4. Step 4.

Let the mixture cool completely, then store it in an airtight container. It will keep for 1 to 4 months at room temperature or up to 12 months frozen.

  5. Step 5.

When you are ready to serve it, cook the stuffing just as you would a prepackaged mix. Combine 2 cups of the stuffing mix with 1/2 cup water and 2 tablespoons melted butter, then prepare it according to your usual stuffing method. This recipe makes about 7 cups of mix.
