Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Prepare each box of cake mix according to the package directions, using the specified ingredients and mixing times. Gently fold the two prepared batters together until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

  2. Step 2.

Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking pan with strained bacon fat, making sure to coat the bottom and sides. Pour the combined batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly with a spatula. If desired, sprinkle a little crisp crumbled bacon over the top.

  3. Step 3.

Bake according to the directions on the yellow cake mix box, typically in a preheated oven at the specified temperature for the recommended time, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. While the cake bakes, prepare the honey butter.

  4. Step 4.

For the honey butter: In a mixing bowl, beat 1/4 pound of butter until light and creamy. Add 1/4 cup of strained bacon drippings and 4 slices of cooked, crisp, crumbled bacon, and beat until well incorporated.

  5. Step 5.

Add approximately 2/3 cup of honey (equal amount to the butter mixture) to the butter mixture. Beat until the mixture is light and fluffy, almost floating out of the bowl. The honey butter can be frozen and will last up to a year.
