Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Prepare the Black Cocoa Cookie Dough according to the recipe instructions. On a floured surface, roll out the dough and cut into mitten shapes using a floured cookie cutter. If you plan to use the cookies as ornaments, use a straw to poke a small hole on one side of each cuff before baking. Bake as directed, then let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack before decorating.

  2. Step 2.

While the cookies cool, prepare the Royal Icing according to the recipe instructions. Divide the icing evenly among 4 bowls. Tint 3 bowls with red, green, and cornflower blue gel food coloring as desired; leave the fourth bowl white or tint it teal. Add water, 1 teaspoon at a time, to each bowl, stirring until the icing reaches the consistency of marshmallow cream (thick but pipeable). Transfer ⅓ cup of each color to separate piping bags fitted with writing tips. To the remaining icing in each bowl, add 1 teaspoon of water to thin it slightly; transfer each thinned icing to a separate resealable plastic bag and snip off a small corner. You should now have 4 piping bags with thick icing and 4 resealable bags with thinner icing.

  3. Step 3.

To decorate, start with the cuffs. Working with one mitten at a time, use the thicker icing of your chosen color to pipe the outline of the cuff. Then, squirt some of the thinner icing of the same color inside the outline; use a small brush to spread it evenly to the edges. While the cuff icing is still wet, sprinkle with white, green, or blue sanding sugar as desired. Repeat for all cookies, then let the cuffs set for about 15 minutes.

  4. Step 4.

After the cuffs are set, decorate the mitten body. Use the thicker icing in a different color to pipe patterns such as stripes, dots, or snowflakes onto the mitten. You can also use the thinner icing to fill in larger areas, spreading with a brush. Add sanding sugar for sparkle while the icing is wet. Let the decorated cookies dry completely, about 1 hour. If using as ornaments, thread a ribbon through the hole and tie a bow.
