Gather these ingredients — no prep needed yet.
- 6 large all-purpose apples, cored
- ½ to ¾ cup white or brown sugar, to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
- (½ to 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon)
- ⅔ cup water, apple juice, or cider
Let's Cook
-
Step 1.
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Arrange in a deep baking dish or heavy pot: 6 large all-purpose apples, cored
-
Step 2.
Divide evenly among the hollows: ½ to ¾ cup white or brown sugar, to taste; 2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
-
Step 3.
If desired, sprinkle with: (½ to 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon)
-
Step 4.
Pour into the dish: ⅔ cup water, apple juice, or cider
-
Step 5.
Cover tightly with foil or a lid and bake until the apples are nearly tender when pierced with a fork but not mushy, about 20 minutes. Uncover and bake the apples, basting frequently with the cooking juices, until soft but still firm enough to hold their shape, 20 minutes longer. If the juices are thin, transfer the apples to a serving dish and reduce the juices in the dish, then pour over the apples. Serve hot or chilled.
