Cooked wheat berries combined with sautéed onions, mixed dried fruits, and a hint of cinnamon. A hearty side dish that can be made with butter or olive oil and optional toasted nuts.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cups cooked wheat, spelt, or Kamut berries, or a combination of cooked grains
  • 1 cup mixed dried fruits, such as diced dried apricots or pitted prunes, dark or golden raisins, or dried currants, cherries, or cranberries
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ½ cup chicken broth or water
  • Salt and black pepper
  • (¼ cup chopped toasted blanched almonds, walnuts, or pecans)

Gather these ingredients - no prep needed yet.

  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ½ cup chicken broth or water
  • Salt and black pepper
  • (¼ cup chopped toasted blanched almonds, walnuts, or pecans)

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

    Heat in a large skillet over medium heat: 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil

  2. Step 2.

    Add and cook, stirring, until golden, 8 to 10 minutes: 1 medium onion, chopped

  3. Step 3.

    Stir in: 3 cups cooked wheat, spelt, or Kamut berries, or a combination of cooked grains; 1 cup mixed dried fruits, such as diced dried apricots or pitted prunes, dark or golden raisins, or dried currants, cherries, or cranberries; 1 cinnamon stick; ½ cup chicken broth or water

  4. Step 4.

    Cover and cook over low heat, stirring once or twice, about 10 minutes. Season to taste with: Salt and black pepper

  5. Step 5.

    If desired, sprinkle with: (¼ cup chopped toasted blanched almonds, walnuts, or pecans)
