Let's Cook
-
Step 1.
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter a baking dish (about 8x8 inches or similar).
-
Step 2.
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a small pan or microwave. Stir in 2 cups soft bread crumbs until evenly coated.
-
Step 3.
In a separate bowl, combine ½ cup sugar, the grated rind of 1 lemon (reserve the juice), ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg. Mix well.
-
Step 4.
Spread a layer of the buttered crumbs on the bottom of the prepared dish to cover it.
-
Step 5.
Add half of the chopped apples (about 1½ cups) over the crumbs. Sprinkle with half of the sugar-spice mixture.
-
Step 6.
Add another layer of buttered crumbs, then the remaining apples, and finally the remaining sugar-spice mixture. Top with the remaining buttered crumbs.
-
Step 7.
Mix the reserved lemon juice with ¼ cup water and drizzle evenly over the top of the crumb mixture.
-
Step 8.
Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
-
Step 9.
Remove the foil and continue baking for a few minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy. Let cool slightly before serving.
