Gather these ingredients — no prep needed yet.

  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 591 ml low-fat (1 percent) milk
  • 8 large eggs
  • 29.6 ml Dijon mustard
  • Kosher salt and pepper
  • 227 g thinly sliced deli ham

Prepare

  • Chop 4.93 ml chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 large baguette, thinly sliced
  • Shred 227 g Cheddar cheese
  • 14.8 ml snipped fresh chives, snipped

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Spray a square 2-quart baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

  2. Step 2.

In a large bowl, whisk together 2½ cups low-fat (1%) milk, 8 large eggs, 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme, and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper until well blended.

  3. Step 3.

Arrange half of the thinly sliced baguette slices in the prepared baking dish, overlapping them slightly. Pour half of the milk mixture evenly over the bread, then sprinkle with half of the shredded Cheddar cheese. Layer all of the thinly sliced deli ham on top, then repeat with the remaining bread, milk mixture, and Cheddar cheese. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or up to overnight.

  4. Step 4.

When ready to bake, heat the oven to 350°F. Uncover the dish and bake until the top is golden brown and the custard is set (the center should be firm and not jiggle), 50 to 55 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with snipped fresh chives.
