Step 1.
Peel, core, and slice 4 to 6 apples. Place the apple slices in a large bowl.

Add ½ cup sugar, 1 to 2 tablespoons water, bits of 1 tablespoon butter, and your choice of spices (such as cinnamon or nutmeg) to the bowl. Mix until the apples are evenly coated.

Pour the apple mixture into an uncooked piecrust. Lay the upper crust on top, pinch the edges to seal, and slash the top crust in a few places to allow steam to escape.

Place a baking sheet on the oven's bottom rack to catch any bubbling filling. Bake the pie at 425°F for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown on the edges. Let the pie cool before serving.
