- 2 cup packed dark brown sugar
- 1/2 cup apple cider or juice
- 1 tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
Prepare
- 6 apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
Let's Cook
-
Step 1.
Place the peeled, cored, and finely chopped apples in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan or Dutch oven. Add the dark brown sugar, apple cider or juice, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Stir to combine.
-
Step 2.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer until the apples are soft, about 20 minutes.
-
Step 3.
Using an immersion blender, puree the apple mixture directly in the pot until smooth. Alternatively, carefully transfer the mixture to a countertop blender, puree until smooth, then return it to the pot.
-
Step 4.
Cook the puree over low heat for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent splattering, until the apple butter has thickened to your desired consistency. It should be thick and spreadable.
-
Step 5.
Let the apple butter cool completely. Then transfer it to clean jars, seal, and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks, or freeze for up to 6 months.
