Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Whisk together in a medium bowl until well blended: 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour; 1 tablespoon baking powder; 1 tablespoon sugar; ¾ teaspoon salt

  2. Step 2.

Add and stir until a soft dough forms: ¾ cup (175g) warm water; 1 tablespoon (15g) vegetable oil

  3. Step 3.

With lightly floured hands, knead the dough just until smooth and slightly elastic, about 1 minute. (If kneaded too much, the dough will be difficult to roll out later.) Place the dough in an oiled bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 2 hours.

  4. Step 4.

Heat to 375°F in a 10-inch-wide heavy pot or deep skillet: 2 inches lard or vegetable oil

  5. Step 5.

While the lard or oil heats, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to just over ⅛ inch thick and cut into 3-inch squares.

  6. Step 6.

Fry in batches until puffy and light brown, about 1 minute per side, turning with tongs. Drain on paper towels. Drizzle with: Honey

  7. Step 7.

    Or sprinkle with: Powdered sugar
