- 2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tsp red food coloring
- 1 tsp distilled white vinegar
- Nonstick cooking spray
Let's Cook
-
Step 1.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, ¼ cup sugar, 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 teaspoons baking soda, 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg. Whisk until well combined.
-
Step 2.
Add 1½ cups buttermilk, ½ cup vegetable oil, and 2 large eggs to the dry ingredients. Whisk until well combined.
-
Step 3.
Add 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, 2 teaspoons red food coloring, and 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar. Whisk the batter until smooth.
-
Step 4.
Preheat a waffle iron until hot. Spray the waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray.
-
Step 5.
Pour about ½ cup of the batter (or according to your waffle iron's instructions) onto the hot waffle iron. Cook until the outer edges are nice and crisp, 5 to 6 minutes. Many waffle irons have a light that indicates when the waffle is done.
-
Step 6.
Transfer the cooked waffles to a wire rack to cool for about a minute. Repeat with the remaining batter, spraying the waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray between batches as needed.
-
Step 7.
Serve the waffles with desired toppings, such as Southern Fried Cinnamon Apples, fresh fruit and whipped cream, or pure maple syrup.
