Let's Prepare

Collect

Gather these ingredients - no prep needed yet.

  • 2 cup self-rising flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • kosher salt
  • 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup butter-flavored vegetable shortening
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring
  • Honey

Prepare

  • Soften 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, shredded on a cheese grater

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with softened butter.

  2. Step 2.

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook, combine 2 cups self-rising flour, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder, ½ teaspoon cream of tartar, and ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt. Whisk until well combined.

  3. Step 3.

Add ¾ cup cold buttermilk, ½ cup cold unsalted butter (shredded on a cheese grater), ¼ cup butter-flavored vegetable shortening, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and a few drops of red food coloring (about 8 drops) to the dry ingredients. Mix on medium speed until a red dough forms, about 2 minutes.

  4. Step 4.

Lightly flour a work surface and rolling pin. Turn the dough out and roll it to ½ inch thick. Fold the dough into quarters to create layers, then flatten again to about ½ inch thick.

  5. Step 5.

Cut out biscuits using a small canning jar lid, biscuit cutter, or cookie cutter. Transfer the biscuits to the prepared baking dish, placing them close together.

  6. Step 6.

Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the biscuits are fluffy and risen. While the biscuits bake, soften additional butter for brushing.

  7. Step 7.

Brush or rub softened butter on top of the warm biscuits. Serve with more softened butter and honey.
