Let's Prepare

Collect

Gather these ingredients — no prep needed yet.

  • 1 quart apple cider
  • 1 quart cranberry juice
  • 2 cup orange juice
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 6 mandarin oranges
  • 12 whole cloves
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • dark rum
  • cinnamon sticks

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

In a slow cooker, combine 1 quart apple cider, 1 quart cranberry juice, 2 cups orange juice, ¾ cup brown sugar, and 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon. Stir well to dissolve the sugar and evenly distribute the cinnamon.

  2. Step 2.

Slice 6 mandarin oranges in half. Push 2 whole cloves into the peel side of each half (or use 1 teaspoon ground cloves stirred directly into the juice mixture). Add the clove-studded orange halves to the slow cooker.

  3. Step 3.

Set the slow cooker to high and heat until the mixture is steaming, then reduce to low or warm setting. Let simmer for as long as desired, stirring periodically. The grogg can be kept warm all day.

  4. Step 4.

To serve, ladle the hot liquid into mugs, leaving the mandarin oranges in the slow cooker. Add 1 ounce of dark rum per mug if desired, and garnish each with a cinnamon stick.

  5. Step 5.

After serving, any leftover grogg can be cooled, refrigerated overnight, and reheated the next day. The flavor improves with time.
