Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

    Heat the oven to 350°F. Oil a 2½- to 3-quart baking dish.

  2. Step 2.

    In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, mustard, nutmeg, and ¼ teaspoon each salt and pepper. Add the bread pieces and let sit, tossing occasionally, for 5 minutes to absorb the liquid.

  3. Step 3.

    Fold the red onion wedges, apple slices, torn ham, and shredded Cheddar into the bread mixture until evenly distributed. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread into an even layer.

  4. Step 4.

    Bake until the bread pudding is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. If the top browns too quickly, cover loosely with foil. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with a green salad if desired.
