Let's Prepare

Collect

Gather these ingredients — no prep needed yet.

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 4 cup broccoli florets
  • 1/3 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground ginger

Prepare

  • 3 tbsp cornstarch, divided
  • 1 lb boneless round steak or charcoal chuck steak, cut into thin 3-inch strips
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 small onion, cut into wedges

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

In a bowl, combine 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 2 tablespoons water, and 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder until smooth. Add the beef strips and toss to coat evenly.

  2. Step 2.

In a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Stir-fry the beef in batches if needed until it reaches desired doneness, about 3-4 minutes for medium. Remove the beef from the pan and keep warm.

  3. Step 3.

In the same pan, add the remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Stir-fry the onion wedges over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes until softened. Add the broccoli florets to the pan and cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the broccoli is tender but still crisp.

  4. Step 4.

While the vegetables cook, in a small bowl whisk together 1/3 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, the remaining 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and 1/2 cup water until smooth.

  5. Step 5.

Return the cooked beef to the pan with the vegetables. Pour the sauce into the pan. Cook and stir the mixture for 2 minutes, until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and vegetables.
