Prepare

Let's Cook
-
Step 1.
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a baking sheet with vegetable oil and dust with flour.
-
Step 2.
In a large mixing bowl, sift or whisk together 2 cups self-rising flour, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1½ teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon cream of tartar, and ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt.
-
Step 3.
Add 1¾ cups buttermilk and ⅓ cup butter-flavored shortening to the flour mixture. Combine with a pastry cutter or fork until a dough forms.
-
Step 4.
In a separate bowl, combine ½ cup thawed and minced frozen cherries, 1 teaspoon almond extract, ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg, and the remaining 2 tablespoons granulated sugar. Stir until well combined.
-
Step 5.
Add the cherry mixture to the biscuit dough and work it in using your hands until evenly distributed.
-
Step 6.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and flatten into a rectangle about 2 inches thick. Cut into 8 equal sections and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
-
Step 7.
Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly on the baking sheet.
-
Step 8.
While the biscuits are baking, in a medium bowl, whisk together 1 cup powdered sugar, 3 tablespoons half-and-half, and 1½ teaspoons almond extract until smooth.
-
Step 9.
Drizzle the icing over the warm biscuits. Serve warm.
