Let's Prepare

Collect

Gather these ingredients - no prep needed yet.

  • 12 bread rounds
  • bread scraps
  • 0.667 shredded cheese
  • meat
  • milk
  • salt
  • mustard

Prepare

  • broccoli, squeezed dry
  • Beat eggs

Let's Cook

  1. Step 1.

Cut 12 rounds from bread and set aside. Take the bread scraps and fit them into the bottom of a greased 13x9-inch pan, pressing to cover the bottom evenly.

  2. Step 2.

Place 2/3 of the shredded cheese over the bread scraps in the pan, then spread all the broccoli (or spinach, squeezed dry) over the cheese, followed by all the meat in an even layer.

  3. Step 3.

Arrange the 12 bread rounds on top of the meat layer, covering the surface as much as possible.

  4. Step 4.

In a bowl, combine milk, salt, mustard, and beaten eggs, whisking until well blended. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the contents in the casserole dish, ensuring it seeps down through the layers.

  5. Step 5.

Cover the casserole with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or up to 24 hours, to allow the bread to absorb the liquid.

  6. Step 6.

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Bake the casserole uncovered for 55 to 70 minutes. After the first 45 minutes of baking, sprinkle the remaining cheese on top, then continue baking until the casserole is set and golden on top.
