- ¼ teaspoon baking powder
- ⅛ teaspoon baking soda
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- 1 stick (4 oz or 115g) unsalted butter
- ⅔ cup (155g) packed light brown sugar
- ¼ cup (50g) sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 large egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon (25g) light corn syrup
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
- (1 cup chopped pecans, toasted, 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips, or ⅔ cup shredded sweetened coconut)

Step 1.
Whisk together thoroughly in a medium bowl: 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour; ¼ teaspoon baking powder; ⅛ teaspoon baking soda; ⅛ teaspoon salt

Melt in a large heavy saucepan over medium heat: 1 stick (4 oz or 115g) unsalted butter

Step 3.
Let the butter brown, stirring occasionally, until light golden brown and fragrant, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in until well blended: ⅔ cup (155g) packed light brown sugar; ¼ cup (50g) sugar

Let cool to barely warm. Stir in until well combined: 1 large egg; 1 large egg yolk; 1 tablespoon (25g) light corn syrup; 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla

Step 5.
Stir the flour mixture into the wet ingredients. If desired, stir in: (1 cup chopped pecans, toasted, 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips, or ⅔ cup shredded sweetened coconut)

Step 6.
Scrape into the pan. Bake until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool completely in the pan on a rack before cutting.
