  • 1 cup diced peeled tart apples
  • ¾ cup chopped pitted prunes
  • ½ cup chopped toasted walnuts or pecans
  • 1 stick (4 ounces) butter, melted, or ½ cup bacon drippings or duck or goose fat
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • (1 large egg, well beaten)
  • ½ cup chicken, pork, duck, or goose stock or broth

    If baking separately as a dressing, preheat the oven to 350°F and butter an 8-inch square baking dish. Combine in a bowl: 3 cups cubed white bread (crusts removed); 1 cup diced peeled tart apples; ¾ cup chopped pitted prunes; ½ cup chopped toasted walnuts or pecans; 1 stick (4 ounces) butter, melted, or ½ cup bacon drippings or duck or goose fat; 1 tablespoon lemon juice; 1 teaspoon salt

    Spoon the stuffing into the bird. If baking as a dressing, add: (1 large egg, well beaten)

  3. Step 3.

    Transfer to the prepared baking dish and moisten with: ½ cup chicken, pork, duck, or goose stock or broth

  4. Step 4.

    Bake the dressing until browned, about 30 minutes. The stuffing is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
