Apple And Prune Dressing
About 4 ½ cups; 6 servings Excellent with roasted pork, goose, or duck.
Ingredients
- 3 cups cubed white bread (crusts removed)
- 1 cup diced peeled tart apples
- ¾ cup chopped pitted prunes
- ½ cup chopped toasted walnuts or pecans
- 1 stick (4 ounces) butter, melted, or ½ cup bacon drippings or duck or goose fat
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon salt
- (1 large egg, well beaten)
- ½ cup chicken, pork, duck, or goose stock or broth

If baking separately as a dressing, preheat the oven to 350°F and butter an 8-inch square baking dish. Combine in a bowl: 3 cups cubed white bread (crusts removed); 1 cup diced peeled tart apples; ¾ cup chopped pitted prunes; ½ cup chopped toasted walnuts or pecans; 1 stick (4 ounces) butter, melted, or ½ cup bacon drippings or duck or goose fat; 1 tablespoon lemon juice; 1 teaspoon salt

Spoon the stuffing into the bird. If baking as a dressing, add: (1 large egg, well beaten)

Transfer to the prepared baking dish and moisten with: ½ cup chicken, pork, duck, or goose stock or broth

Bake the dressing until browned, about 30 minutes. The stuffing is done when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
